The 17th Manchesters were recruited from the City’s Clerks and Warehousemen.  Under the auspices of Lord Derby and the Mayor of Manchester, local businesses supported the formation of the City Battalions and specific posters (Main Image) were published to attract men from offices, counter clerks and warehouse workers.  Pay was maintained by employers and jobs were promised ‘when’ the men returned.

Manchester men answering the general call to these posters will have joined  11th,12th, 13th or 14th Battalions, the Territorial Battalions, as well as a number of other Corps and Regiments that recruited in the City.
