High Wood, Longueval

The area in this image was contested from 14th July to 15th September, with inordinate losses.  I’ve only scratched the surface of these battles, with Mancunians in the 20th (Public Schools) Battalion of the Royal Fusilers. War poet Robert Graves was wounded and assumed (incorrectly) dead near High Wood.  He was dispariging about the role of the Public Schools men, which I find uncomfortable.

The Hell that was High Wood.
