JOHN KNIGHT 25 10-03-17 Private  17th Bn. United Kingdom ‘8688’ MANCHESTER (PHILIPS PARK) CEMETERY  Son of Samson and Caroline Knight, of 13 Taylor Street, Harpurhey. Warehouseman at Ivy Tannery Co, Blackley. John enlisted in 4th City Bn on 07/09/1914, he was posted to 2nd City Bn & trained II Pln. France 08/11/1915. On 13/02/1915 John was accidentally shot in the abdomen by Pte L/Cpl 8690 Clarence Edward Kelsall – who died of wounds on 10/07/1916. He was treated for a lesion to the small intestine in 5th CCS & 2nd Gen Hosp, Rouen, before evacuation Home, via HS St St Denis, on 01/03/1916. John Knight was discharged from 3rd Bn with a Silver War Badge on 19/10/1916 and died from disease ( and associated with his wounds) in Manchester Infirmary on 10th March 1917. He is buried with his parents in Phillips Park. CWGC accepted this commemoration in 2011, credit to John Hartley & IFCP.

WILLIAM              CHARLESWORTH              32                           08-04-17               Private  17th Bn.               France  ‘43224’  Dies of Wounds. WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY               Son of John and Mary Jane Charlesworth; husband of Beatrice Mary Charlesworth, of Major Cross Street, Widnes, Lancs. Born at Bilston, Staffs. Pte Charlesworth and his Lewis gun team were on outpost duty in front of the lines at Mercatel on the 4th April. At 4.45am, they returned to the front line. Pte Charlesworth, who was carrying, 2 Lewis gun ammo canisters, jumped into the trench, and impaled his thigh on a bayonet fixed to a rifle that was leaning against the trench. He was sent to 32nd Stationary hospital at Wimereux. He has since died of an abdominal haemorrhage. He leaves a widow, Beatrice Mary and 3 children. William, John and Thomas, Arthur. An iron worker.
