We are indebted to the Somme Association for access to Thiepval Wood, under the wonderful stewardship of Andy from the Somme Museum.
Andy provided a great explanation of 36th Ulster Divisions role on 1st July 1916 and infomative explanation of the preserved trenches they had advanced from in the Wood.
Best of all were anecdotes about the men who served in the trenches and objects that were found in the excavation.
These are some of the best trenches to visit in the Westen Front and the tour has a firm recommendation.
It’s also worth to have a cup of tea at the Somme Association’s Ulster Tower.
