My wife’s grandfather was here after the capture of the Glatz Redoubt on 1st July 1916. He was Samuel Edwin WILLIAMS of the 18th Battalion, Liverpool Pals Regiment. He was awarded the DCM and later the MM. He survived the war. Just a simple office clerk in a firm of Solicitors in Liverpool. Typical of the Hero’s in that day. My wife and I aim to visit this area in 2014 or 2015 or even in 2016 one hundred years later.

      Tim,
The assault on Montauban was an isolated & great success on a disastrous day. It is remarkable what the ordinary young clerks & warehouseman from the north west achieved on such an extraordinary day. May I recommend Montauban – Somme by Graham Maddocks, Leo Cooper 1999. Also Liverpool Pals by the same chap. Graham was instrumental in arranging the Pals Memorial.
Do you have Samuel’s citation for his DCM? I’ll happily look it up for you if you wish.
      Tim
